Heating Sector Transformation

The Initiative

In July 2019, an Executive Order launched a Heating Sector Transformation Initiative in Rhode Island. Led by the Office of Energy Resources (OER) and the Division of Public Utilities and Carriers (DPUC), this effort is intended to advance Rhode Island's development of a cleaner, more affordable and reliable heating future, and engage public and private sector partners in the identification of economic, energy, and environmental opportunities and challenges posed by our state’s heating sector.

The Report

Public Workshop #1, December 13, 2019

During this first workshop, representatives from Brattle provided an introduction to the heating sector of today and discussed what opportunities and challenges exist as society shifts toward a decarbonized heating future. In addition, the project team walked through how potential future heating sector “pathways” will be developed inclusive of stakeholder input, scenario modeling, and emerging technological opportunities, with a goal of producing actionable strategies for Ocean State homes, businesses, and policymakers.

Public Workshop #2, February 13, 2020

The February 13th meeting provided stakeholders an opportunity to hear more about initial analytical results and early insights on heating sector pathways for different types of consumers.

Public Workshop #3, April 7, 2020

The April 7th meeting will provide stakeholders with an update on analytical results and discussion of the policy framework over the next 10 years.
